Becoming successful at anything takes a great deal of hard work, more so as a black actress in Hollywood. However, over the years, some women have made their mark on the industry, smashing ceilings, holding so much star power, and ruling the Hollywood empire. Of course, there are so much more to do and more excellent feats to achieve, but for now, we will pause and hail the great black actresses who have made notable names for themselves in Hollywood.

• Viola Davis

She is one actress that changed the game from the word “go.” From the popular tv show “How to get away with murder,” she received the most Oscar nominations for an actress of African American descent. She went in to win her first Oscar in 2007 and a golden globe from the movie “Fences.” She is also the first person of African American descent to win the famous triple-acting crowns.

• Angela Basset

She is one of the most famous black actresses with incredible titles and achievements to her name. Her career has spanned over 40 years, and she has received an Oscar nomination for the best actress for her role in “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” She is believed to have paved the way for many black actresses today. While she is an icon herself, she has played several other iconic women such as Katherine Jacks and Rosa Parks.

Other notable mentions include Halle Berry, Gail Fisher, Hattie McDaniel, Oprah Winfrey, amongst others.
