2020 saw the rise and fall of movies. But, just because the theaters closed did not mean movies were out altogether. With streaming platforms sharing movies and theaters re-opening, blockbuster films still came out into the world. “The Lodge” was a quality horror film during the year. The stage was set for a step-mom with her new step-kids. A series of manipulation leads to a get under your skin kind of movie. You might have bad dreams after watching this film, but it will be worth it.

“The Social Dilemma” changed the way we all see technology, right? Jeff Orlowski brought to life a real problem in modern-day culture: social media. With themes like cybersecurity, tech addictions, and data mining, “The Social Dilemma” gave us all a greater understanding of our world inside the technology.

“Soul” was sent out by Disney+. Peter Docter, the writer of “Inside Out,” brought a world of jazz music to life in this fun-filled film. Major themes in the movies revolved around death, purpose, and life. The brain certainly expanded in a whole new way for people who watched this. This film was a great way to celebrate Pixar’s 25th birthday.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” directed by Denzel Washington, told the story of Ma Rainey before Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. With the deceased actor, Chadwick Boseman, playing in his last film, nostalgia abounds in this heartfelt movie of history. Viola Davis plays Ma Rainey, and does so with charisma that keeps tensions high and the music real smooth.
