Before They Were Famous: Celebritries We Never Would Have Guessed Roomed Together

We all know that the road to stardom is a rocky, uphill climb. Plenty of our favorite celebs today didn’t start with a lot of money in their pockets. Some worked the typical waiting jobs while some worked odd jobs like driving taxis and mowing lawns to get by while waiting for their big break. Oftentimes, a lot of celebs also bunked with other future celebs to help cut on costs. Other times, they were college roommates. They might have also bunked with a fellow co-star to improve their characters’ chemistry. Whichever reason, we’re sure these living arrangements lead to some pretty interesting stories. Read on to find out which of your favorite celebs you would never have guessed were roommates.

Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake

Although the pair have admitted that they’re not as close as they used to be, they were really close when they were kids. Back when they were young at the beginning of their careers, Ryan and Justin appeared and became close on the set of The Mickey Mouse Club. In their second year on the show, Ryan’s mom had to move to Canada for work, and he ended up staying with the Timberlakes.

Justin noted that they were a lot closer than the other kids on set probably because they shared the same bathroom. He also recalls that they were like brothers. And he remembers that they even pulled some crazy stunts on set like stealing a golf cart. Talk about having fun at Disney, right?

Raven Symone and Lindsay Lohan

Raven and Lindsay first met on a fashion shoot, and the two immediately clicked. In that first meeting, Raven thought her former roommate was so cool -acting and looking different from other girls in the industry. And since they were both not going to college at that time, they decide to have a roommate experience of their own.

Unfortunately, neither of them got much of an experience out of it. Lindsay was often at work and was barely around. As Raven told US Weekly in 2008, Lindsay paid rent, and all her clothes were in the apartment, but she was only at home maybe three times. Due to that, their living arrangement didn’t last very long.

Adam DeVine and Blake Anderson

The Workaholics costars lived in the same house while writing and filming the hit Comedy Central Series. They also lived with fellow costar Kyle Newacheck who’s also the show’s writer and co-creator. And the most fun part is it’s the very same house where their fictional characters lived, so they weren’t just roommates at home, they also lived out the show itself. Talk about dedication!

DeVine told the AV Club in 2012 that they actually scouted for their dream home to film in. But at the end of the day, they found that their very own home was as perfect as it could get. They were used to it, and they could really write about it. Maybe that’s why their relationship on screen was so believable.

Milo Ventimiglia and Penn Badgley

Way before we knew Milo as everyone’s favorite dad on This Is Us and Penn as everyone’s favorite creeper on You, the pair lived together while they worked on the series The Bedford Diaries. Although there was a ten-year gap between them (Milo was 28 and Penn was 18), the arrangement had some pretty sweet benefits, especially for Penn.

As it turns out, Milo has been very helpful in letting Penn have some fun around town. According to the younger actor, he would often borrow Milo’s ID to get into bars. He’s even sure he still has the ID lying around somewhere. That’s some pretty sweet memorabilia if you ask us.

Lea Michele and Dianna Agron

Though their characters get down to some pretty serious smackdowns on the show, the Glee costars are actually very close behind the scenes. They even moved in together in 2009 while working on the show. In an interview with New York Magazine, Lea opened up that they would often come home, joke about the smackdown they just had at work, then decide to bake cookies. They even adopted three cute kitties: Claude, Shiela, and Zack.

They’ve also been inseparable as friends. Lea supported Dianna during her breakup with ex Alex Pettyfer. Lea also once defended Dianna from a guy who grabbed her face and kissed her during a flight. In turn, Dianna revealed that the person she learned from the most was Lea. If that’s not one of the sweetest friendships, then we don’t know what is.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck

Matt and Ben have known each other for decades ever since they were kids. They’re one of Hollywood’s longest and most popular friendships. That’s why it’s no wonder that these two lived together. Their time cohabitating becomes even more endearing because, at that time, they wrote their Oscar-winning 1997 film Good Will Hunting which was undeniably a turning point in both of their careers.

Through thick and thin, the two stuck by each other. According to Ben, they started out in a house next to Venice Beach. When they ran out of money, they got an apartment. They also moved around a lot. They were in Glendale, Eagle Rock, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Venice, near the Hollywood Bowl, and all over. They even got thrown out a couple of times. And Ben recalls that they often had to downgrade or upgrade depending on who had the money.

Nikki Reed and Kristen Stewart

During the filming of the first Twilight film, Nikki and Kristen got on so well that they decided to move in together once they started filming the second installment of the saga. Nikki confessed that she and Kristen would often stay in instead of gallivanting around town. And they’d often enjoy pasta made by their co-star Peter Facinelli who Nikki described as a great cook.

Sadly, their domestic bliss was shattered by a love triangle between Nikki, Kristen, and Twilight’s lead man Robert Pattinson. The actor was dating Nikki at the time, but he chose to be with Kristen. In an interview with Seventeen Magazine, Nikki admitted that they’re still not on good terms, and we can’t expect to see them hanging out anytime soon.

Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve

The story of Robin and Christopher’s friendship is one of the most touching and heartwarming Hollywood friendship stories out there. The two met in the 1970s at Juilliard, where they became roommates. Williams revealed that they were complete opposites, but it is precisely this difference that made them click. And ever since then, they were life-long friends.

Ron Galella/WireImage.com

They had a pact that whoever made it as an actor first would help the other. And when Reeves had his horseriding accident which paralyzed him from the neck down, Williams was there through it all. He even made Reeve laugh again, who at that time felt depressed and uncertain about his future. After the death of Reeve and his wife, Williams vowed to take care of their son. And after Williams’ own death, his children continued his support for his late friend through the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

Lauren Graham and Connie Britton

Lorelai Gilmore and Tami Taylor! Who would’ve thought? They met in an acting class in New York, and since they hit it off, they decided to live together. Before these two made it big, the Gilmore Girls and Friday Night Lights stars were essentially partners in squatting.

Graham confessed that they lived in an empty house that they weren’t supposed to be in. They had no furniture, and all they ate were Rice Krispies Treats. Graham also recalled that Britton would often leave dishes in the sink and would borrow her shoes without permission. But she never held a grudge, and to this day, the two remain close friends.

Jonah Hill and Justin Long

Sometimes, no matter how much we love our BFFs, living with them could turn into a nightmare. And this comedy duo had to learn that the hard way. The two shared a place sometime around the 2000s. But apparently, they got on each other’s nerves so much, like an old married couple that they inevitably had to end the roommate situation.

On Watch What Happens Live, Justin recalled the little things that Jonah did that annoyed him. He remembers that his friend left the bathroom door open, didn’t clean up after himself, and recycled everything, including banana peels and glass. They fought all the time. Thankfully, they ended the cohabitation before it could end their friendship.

Amy Smart and Ali Larter

It’s very easy to mistake the two blondes for sisters. And they might just be as close as that. This is partly because of their roommate’s history. The pair met while modeling in Italy, and since they hit it off so quickly, they lived together when they both moved to LA.

Larter credits Smart for pushing her into pursuing acting. And soon after moving in together, Amy and Ali landed roles alongside each other in James Van Der Beek’s Varsity Blues. Since then, the two blondes have remained close friends. That’s why it’s no surprise that when Amy married in 2012, Ali was one of her bridesmaids.

James Corden and Dominic Cooper

In the early days of their youth, the longtime buddies shacked up in a flat in London. And just as they reveled on the Late Late Show, it was a pretty standard roommate experience for two 20-somethings who were struggling to figure out adult living. James recalled that they rented the flat furnished, but there was no furniture in it. Funnily enough, they never thought to complain.

They had only one bed and a couple of houseware items between them. Dominic recalls that they had only one piece of cutlery, a spatula. And one time, James came home and caught him eating baked beans with that spatula. There was even a time that all they had in the fridge was half a Vitamin Water and a chocolate bunny. It might’ve been hard at the time, but boy is it hilarious now.

Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow

The humor realm could not have had a better roommate pairing than this. During their early days as struggling comedians in LA, Adam and Judd shared a $900 apartment in the Valley. On 60 Minutes Overtime, the pair recalled that life at that time was all about work. They would sleep in until noon and would just somehow kind of stumble out to get to work at 8:30 pm.

Though they weren’t big names yet back then, they earned enough for a monthly feast at Red Lobster. Hilariously, Judd described living with Adam to living with the comfortable naked guy in the gym. And when Adam moved to New York once he landed SNL, he still continued paying rent just in case because he was afraid he’d get fired.

Holly Hunter and Frances McDormand

Sometimes, random roommate assignments are the worst. Other times, they lead to people finding their best buds, which is true for BFFs Holly Hunter and Frances McDormand. The pair hit it off famously when they were randomly assigned as roommates at the Yale School of Drama. And since they got so close, they continued living together after graduation, as they were both working on making their breaks in the industry.

It was also through another roommate’s living arrangement that Frances met her husband director Joel Coen. At one point, the ladies stayed under the same roof as Joel and his brother Ethan. They also lived with Evil Dead director Sam Raimi. Later on, the besties won matching Best Actress Oscars—Frances for Fargo and Holly for The Piano.

Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson

These two are inseparable onscreen, but they were also once inseparable as roommates. They met back in their sophomore year in a scriptwriting class at the University of Texas in Austin. And they didn’t talk right up until class ended. Once they did, though, they hit it off so well that they ended up as roommates. Wes even agreed to write Owen’s Edgar Allan Poe term paper in return for getting the bigger bedroom.

As it seems, the actor-director-duo had one of the most action-packed roommate experiences. They fought with their landlord over his refusal to fix their broken window. Then, they staged a break-in and fled the place in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, a private investigator found them. This event inspired them to write Anderson’s debut film, Bottle Rocket. And since then, they’ve been inseparable.

Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow

It doesn’t get any more 90s than these two screen queens sharing living quarters in their early acting days. Apparently, they were inseparable in LA. They even dated some high-profile BFFs as well. Winona went out with Matt Damon, and Gwyneth went out with Ben Affleck. Unfortunately, their friendship didn’t end as well as we’d hoped.

Rumor has it, Paltrow found the script for Shakespeare in Love lying around in their LA apartment and proceeded to audition for the role her then BFF wanted. Like salt in a wound, she even won an Oscar for her performance. Though Gwyneth denied scooping up the part from Winona, it seems that they’ve never made up.

Eddie Redmayne and Jamie Dornan

When these two blokes first hopped over the pond, the pair adorably decided to stick together and live together. They even shared an agent. While looking back on the experience on The Late Late Show, Jamie described themselves to have been very desperate. Work was scarce, and they both went to all the same auditions. On the other hand, Eddie fondly compared his living experience with his former roommate to living with a puppy. He described Jamie as having more energy than any human he’s ever met.

It gets all the more fun because somewhere down the line, Andrew Garfield also moved in with them. They regularly saw each other at auditions, became friends, and then, became roommates. They would sit around and compare the rejections they had received. And to save money, there was a moment they shared a single sandwich between the three of them. Ever since then, they’ve remained good friends and have continuously shown each other support.

Ilana Grazer and Rachel Bloom

Before these two amazing women had their own shows, they were first partners in crime living in Brooklyn. According to Entertainment Weekly, they moved in together right after college. They bonded over their early struggles of breaking into the business as they chased their acting and writing dreams.

image courtesy of Rachel Bloom/ Instagram

Many years later, they still remain close friends. In a 2016 Instagram post, Bloom paid tribute to her former roomie. She shared a selfie of them, and in the caption, she wrote, “6 years ago we were roommates in Brooklyn and now we have tv shows. @ilanusglazer is just the best.”

Brad Pitt and Jason Priestley

In his book Jason Priestley: A Memoir, Jason revealed that before he and fellow star Brad Pitt became the 90s sex symbols we know today, they shared an apartment in Hollywood. And their struggles were just what you’d expect from two new and struggling actors.

They lived on Ramen noodles, generic beer, and Marlboro Light cigarettes. And just for fun, they even had hygiene competitions on who could go the longest without showering and shaving. As Jason admits, Brad always won. They weren’t keen on cleaning up either. So when Brad dated Geena Davis, she would always refuse to enter their apartment.

Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller

Kiera and Sienna were already enjoying success from their works on Pirates of the Caribbean and Factory Girl, but that didn’t stop them from indulging in the roommate experience. When they met on the set of the 2008 biopic The Edge of Love, the two Brits hit it off immediately. They then decided to rent a house together while filming in Wales.

After the film wrapped, the pair didn’t seem to want to give up the experience. And since they loved Wales, they hunted around for the perfect cottages there. According to rumors, they even sought out side-by-side homes on Cardigan Bay so they could go on vacations together.

Stanley Tucci and Ving Rhames

This one we definitely did not see coming, but we are so happy it did. While attending the State University of New York’s Conservatory of Theater Arts at Purchase, these lifelong buds roomed together for a year. It was Stanley who gave his pal the nickname Ving which has now become the actor’s famous stage name.

Their stay together would probably have lasted a long time, but Ving moved out when Juilliard offered him a classical theater scholarship. The pair reunited in 1999 on the stage of the Golden Globes when Ving presented his old friend the award for Best Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie for Winchell.

Poppy Delevingne and Sienna Miller

These two wonderful ladies can often be seen hand in hand in parties or cheering each other on through Instagram. And this is mostly from their time living as roommates. In 2008, Poppy moved to New York from London to focus on her acting and modeling career. And she first lived with Sienna.

Sienna loved that Poppy didn’t take herself too seriously. And Poppy considers her former roommate as a sister from another mister. Since those early days, they’ve shared a lifelong, sincere friendship that shows whenever they make time for each other. And they support one another through their endeavors in life.

Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas

With six decades and counting- the friendship of these two looks set for life. In the 1960s, the two actors lived together in upper Manhattan. DeVito revealed that he wasn’t much for domestic affairs, with Douglas doing the laundry most of the time. But Douglas didn’t rat on his friend saying that DeVito was actually neat.

Douglas also recalls their stay together as a magical time and remembers his friend as a great roommate. They worked together in 80s films such as The Jewel of the Nile and Romancing the Stone. And in 2009, they reunited for Solitary Man.

Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick

Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass! Although their characters on the hit TV series Gossip Girl never bunked together, Chase and Ed did in the early days of the show. Initially, the pair became roommates because they didn’t know whether the show would last or not.

In 2009, Chace told the Interview that they also made the decision since it was a financially smart move. In addition to that, Chace recalls that Ed had never lived away from home, let alone a different country. So he kind of took him under his wing. The actor also admits that it was also partly due to laziness.

Brian Atwood and Melissa McCarthy

Brian and Melissa knew each other from way back from their high school days in Boulder, Colorado. The future shoe designer was so convinced that Melissa would be a star, he convinced her to move and live with him in New York to pursue her dreams. As it turns out, he made the right call.

In a 2012 interview with Popsugar, Brian recalls that they were so broke at the time. He also remembered that he gave Melissa a free subway map for her 21st birthday. Despite their struggles, it was a special time for both of them.

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling

Michelle and Ryan’s onscreen characters on Blue Valentine may not have had the best home life, but off-screen, the actors were much the opposite. In order to capture the intensity of their characters, director Derek Cianfrance asked the two to live together along with the young actress who played their onscreen daughter. They also survived on a strict budget, much like the one their onscreen family has.

They were only supposed to live together for a week, but they got on so well that they chose to continue living together until the end of the shoot. In an interview, Michelle jokingly complained that Ryan was so hard to hate. He did the dishes, and he took care of the kids. No wonder they loved living with each other.

Robert Downey Jr. and Kiefer Sutherland

Before they became Tony Stark and Jack Bauer, Downey and Sutherland lived together for over three years in the 80s in LA. And more than just roommates, they were also close friends who helped each other through breakups.

At that time, Downey was going through a rough patch with then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker. Sutherland stepped in as a shoulder to cry on for both of them. In an interview with Howard Stern, Downey says that he never got jealous of Sutherland and Parker’s special relationship. He took care of her and was there for her as a friend would. Downey and Sutherland worked together in 1969, where critics much-praised their performances.

Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad

These two The Hills stars first met in an art class in San Francisco. As they grew closer, they decided to move in together in LA and attend FIDM. Their cohabitation only ended when Montag moved out to move in with her husband, Spencer Pratt. Before she left, Conrad reportedly told her that she was always welcome to come back.

Sometime after Montag moved out, the pair had a years-long feud. In 2015, Montag opened up to US Weekly about their falling out saying that she spent years pretending to like her former friend for her job, but it wasn’t pleasant. She claims that Conrad lied about her and that Montag was painted as the villain so Conrad could be the good guy.

Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper

Although it was just for a short week, Stone and Cooper still had a good time as housemates in Hawaii. While shooting Aloha in 2015, the two actors didn’t actually see each other all that often. They were filming on opposite sides of the island. But when Cooper’s lease was up, Stone offered to take him in.

In an interview with E! News, their friendly banter and light-hearted demeanor immediately showed how comfortable they were with each other. Emma told the interviewer that they were roommates, which Cooper immediately corrects with “Housemates!” To that, Emma adds that he did have his own little section in the house, his private little enclave.

Miles Heizer and Mae Whitman

We all loved them when they were on-screen siblings in Parenthood. But we love them even more now because of their real-life friendship. These two are best friends, and they’ve been rooming with each other since 2010. The pair often shares their roommate antics on social media.

In an interview with Glamour, Mae fondly describes Miles as pretty special. She even joked that she’d kill him before she lets him leave. On a more serious note, though, the actress envisions living in a house near her best friend and growing old near him for the rest of her life. She also wants their families to be forever intertwined. Isn’t that sweet?

Connie Britton and Kirsten Gillibrand

Connie Britton has had plenty of cool roommates over the years, and one of them is senator Kirsten Gillibrand. In the 1980s, when the two were both studying at Dartmouth, they did a study program in Beijing, where they became roommates. And as it seems, the two were quite adventurous.

They rented out bikes and explored the country every weekend. In her memoir, Kirsten also recalls a time when they went down to the beach in a place called Beihai. She and her friend filled themselves up with great seafood. But when they got home, they got sick and started throwing up nonstop. In the hospital, they were given a black vial of toad venom to drink. Given that experience, it’s no wonder that the pair have remained close friends up until now.

Conan O’Brien and Jeff Garlin

Oh, the shenanigans these two must’ve been in. In the summer of 1988, long before they were successful, these two were already cooking up some pretty hilarious stories as roommates. O’Brien recalls that Garlin would often kick open doors. He’d be deep asleep at 3 am then there would be Garlin kicking down his door and saying, “It’s pudding pop time!”

In an interview with Esquire, Garlin admits that he was the bad roommate. O’Brien was nothing but great. Garlin had air conditioning in his room, and he rarely invited anyone in. This did not make O’Brien happy since his room was sweltering. In addition to that, Garlin would wake O’Brien up all the time just to make himself laugh. As it seems, no grudges were held for all of those pranks.

Jensen Ackles and Ryan Seacrest

We really didn’t see this one coming, but before making it big, the Supernatural actor and the LIVE With Kelly and Ryan host lived together in LA. In an appearance on Ryan’s show, he and old pal Jensen reminisced on their time together, complete with a throwback photo.

image courtesy of Live With Kelly and Ryan

Back then, Jensen was on soap operas and Ryan was starting out on the radio. Apparently, they loved throwing parties, especially when they were able to get free, crushed ice down the street from a Chinese restaurant called George E. Wong. Ryan also joked that both back then and now, Jensen always gets the girls.

Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes

With all the fun goings-on that the Riverdale cast gets up to, it’s no wonder that they’re all so close and tight. Proof of this closeness is that some of them live together from time to time. Although shooting is in Vancouver, Lili and Camila share ann apartment in Los Angeles.

One time, the BFFs even had a fun little cookie stealing moment between them. Camila was trying to get at Lili’s girl scout cookies and was about to take some tasty bites when Lili sneaks up behind her. The best part is that the event was shown on both of their Instagram stories, with one stealing and the other busting her best friend.

KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse

In addition to Lili and Camila, a couple of other Riverdale stars who are rooming with each other are Cole Sprouse and KJ Apa. Since the pandemic began, they have stayed and are quarantined together. According to Dylan Sprouse, he’s heard plenty of fun stories from the two. And apparently, most of what they’re doing is lifting weights and eating cheese.

Interestingly, Cole and KJ actually put in offers for the same house in Nichols Canyon, LA, on the very same day. Instead of fighting over it, Cole generously let his friend take it. As it seems, though, he’s probably enjoying it just as much now that they’ve been rooming together all this time.

Chord Overstreet and Glen Powell

Sometimes, luck comes with your roomie. Well, at least that’s the case for Glen Powell. Apparently, his living situation with Lea Michelle and Dianna Agron’s Glee costar Chord Overstreet is what landed him the role in another Ryan Murphy show Scream Queens.

In an interview about the series, Murphy said that show co-creator Ian Brennan was the one who brought Powell to his attention. Apparently, Brennan knew Powell as Overstreet’s roommate. He saw the guy do improv stuff and thought he’d be great for the part. As soon as Ryan met him and Powell read for the role of Chad Radwell, Ryan described what he felt in the words, “Oh my God. Where have you been all my life?”

Billy Eichner and Robin Lord Taylor

Before they started causing riots on Gotham and Billy on the Street, these two BFFs roomed and worked together. They first met at a release party in their sophomore year at Northwestern University. And since starting out as roommates there, they continued to live together for a while. In the early 2000s, the pair started their very own live comedy talk show Creation Nation.

Creation Nation put their names on the map. The first Billy on the Street videos with Eichner in front of the lens and Taylor holding the camera were a huge success. The only complaint Taylor has of his roommate is that Eichner just never cleaned. Aside from that, everything else was just fabulous.

Geoffrey Rush and Mel Gibson

When you take a look at these two brilliant men’s achievements, you’ll be compelled to believe that birds of the same feather do flock together. Gibson won an Academy Award for Best Director, an Academy Award for Best Picture, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Director for his historical epic Braveheart. On the other hand, Rush is one of the 24 people who has won the Triple Crown of Acting. This includes an Academy Award for film, a Tony Award for theatre, and a Primetime Emmy Award for television.

Image courtesy of Featureflash Photo Agency/Shutterstock

Before they became such iconic Hollywood legends, these two men shared an apartment while going to college at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. While there, they also acted together in a local production of Waiting for Godot.

Justin Hurwitz and Damien Chazelle

For all of us who watched and loved La La Land, we can all blame director Damien Chazelle and music composer Justin Hurwitz for all the feels and the tunes we can’t get out of our heads. The two geniuses met in their freshman year at Harvard. They even started a band called Chester French with a few of their classmates. A couple of years later, the band sparked a bidding war among the major labels. But by that time, Hurwitz and Chazelle had already left to focus on movies and music.

Fun fact, the pair actually started working on the La La Land script in 2010. While working on it, Chazelle remarked that Hurwitz was very demanding. But it was all good since both of them had the same goal: to produce music that would get stuck in our heads. Otherwise, they’d just throw it out. Aside from La La Land, these two were also responsible for another musical genius of a film titled Whiplash. .

Daniel Franzese and Shenae Grimes

We all remember Daniel’s “almost too gay to function” Damian in Mean Girls and, of course, Shenae’s Annie Wilson on 90210. Right before shooting started for Shenae’s show in 2008, she moved in with Daniel. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she met Daniel through mutual friends and the living situation worked out pretty great for both of them.

Aside from his iconic role on Mean Girls, Daniel also starred in Larry Clark’s Bully. He also had several live comedy shows, namely Jersey Shoresical: A Frickin’ Rock Opera and I’ve Never Really Made The Kind Of Money To Become A Mess. On the other hand, Shenae also appeared in Picture This and True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet. She also wrote and directed a music video for her song Myself and I. She has since appeared in CTV’s police drama The Detail.
